Growing Ferns in the UK

May has been incredibly slow for our tropical plants, although it has been a wet month the temperatures are still low so plants aren't moving and growing just yet. The anticipation of spring and the wait for it, was difficult for gardeners who specialise in tropicals and ferns.

During the month there has been a lot of time spent on propagation of our Hedychium varieties, which do well in the UK assuming they are looked after well. Hedychium plants thrive in partial shade, in soil which has excellent drainage but remains moist. Rhizomes should not be in boggy soil, but the plant requires consistent water. You can plant the Hedychium rhizomes for quick blooms, or sow seed indoors and transplant outside later.

Our hardy Impatiens are (relatively) easily grown shade lovers, offering both stunning foliage and floral interest. All of our hardy impatiens look stunning in either a pot on a patio, or within a garden bed.

All of our seed sowing has been put on hold until June, when the temperatures rise to more suitable levels (hopefully!).

In May, ferns have been the plant of the month; they enjoy a cooler damp spring and are looking their best, sending up new frond of all shapes heights and colours. A delight for lovers of tropicals in the UK!
